What is your general belief about who or what is most responsible for causing the conflict?

My belief about the massacre is that the massacre happened beacase of the cayuse tribe. Not that is wasnt the Whitmans fault for not talking to the indians. There was so many people that got killed, it was not fair for the indians to kill inocent people.

What is the relevant background information? (i.e. who, what, when, where)?

The people involved in the massacre were Marcus Whitman, Narcissa Whitman, and many other that were trying to help the Cayuse tribe. The massacre happened on November 29, 1847, in Walla Walla Washington. The massacre happened because of a misunderstanding event on the indians behaf. The whitmans were just trying to help the indians, but the indians didnt get that.(www.pbs.org)
What were 3 factors that helped cause the conflict (politics, economics, geography, history)?

I think one reason why is the Cayuse thought that the Whitmans were helping white people more than the indians. Another reason the indian attacted was, when the whitmans came over to Walla Walla they brought measles. That made the cayuse tribe think that the whitmans were not takeing care of the indian tribe. The last thing that helped cause the conflict was the people coming to the Cayuse land. They might of been nice at first then decied to get the whitmans out.(www.historylink.org)
Explain why one factor is more important than the others.

The most impotant factor is that the indians thought the whitmans and others were helping and taking better care if the white people. There was a story from some people that surrvived and they said that they were starving in the house and one of them went out to try to get food and when he did the women heard gun fire and they new he was dead. How could the conflict have been avoided?

The indians should have talked to the Whitmans, insted of fighting and killing. The cayuse could of been more peaceful. Theindians should of talked to the whitmans before killing and hurting inosent people.(Www.historylink.com)
